Viette

Mye Hoang / USA / 2012 / 90 min / English, Vietnamese with English subtitles / Color / HDCAM* / World Premiere

Description

For Vietnamese Americans of the 1.5 generation, the guilt received from their elders can be an unrelenting cage that suppresses dreams. Many have to navigate between two almost opposite worlds to find success. Mye Hoang, a key player in the Asian American film-festival circuit (she helped create the Asian Film Festival of Dallas and was Associate Director of the San Diego Asian Film Festival) tackles these complex issues in Viette, her debut feature film. In her senior year of high school, Viette does everything she can to please those around her, especially her family, all while trying to boost her college application. She must also balance the demands of her boyfriend, Matt, who wants nothing more than to love openly. Instead, their love is forbidden, and Viette’s iron-fisted father does everything he can to stop them.

First-time director Hoang does a sensational job turning the common themes of teenage indecision, generational conflict, and remaining true to oneself into a dramatic, nuanced tale, one made all the more memorable through a soulful score and some sultrylove scenes. Evoking the desires and uncertainties of young adulthood, Viette underlines the difficulty of balancing family loyalty and personal dreams, and the price paid for choosing one over the other.
